A highly regarded course (especially at the time I was a student). One thing this course taught me was that I did not want to pursue a career in this field. Whether this was always in my heart or whether this course "broke me" I do not know. It also taught me great discipline and tenacity which I am grateful for. For this reason, and the fact that it provides graduates with great career prospects, I give it 2 stars. However, I honestly had an overall negative experience with this course at this school. There was always a feeling of extreme pressure and there were hardly any opportunities to actually dance on stage and perform, which is what I enjoyed the most about dancing. Therefore, my enjoyment was definitely not nurtured. At the time when I was a student, you would receive your VCE but not en entrance score for university. This meant that when I left the course, a year away from completion, I had to return to school to continue 4 more subjects before receiving an entrance score for university. I would recommend other full-time ballet programs over this particular one.
The teachers at The Australian Ballet School don't give any encouragement which forces you to have a thick skin, good for industry later on but at time and during those developmental years I don't think it's healthy or positive. I found every day at this institution very tough but ultimately am glad I graduated and received what I believe to be the best ballet training in the country.
The teachers weren't supportive or encouraging at all, it was a very tough environment which could either make or break you (break being the most common). Good training but at the risk of your mental health. Every day you're under pressure and felt as if you're auditioning for the next part of the full time course. Not healthy for a 15 year old.
At the age of 15, I felt this was very tough work. Very competitive environment, little rest and a big jump from part time dance training to full-time training here. Not the most supportive environment either for such a young age.
