The positive experience of this course and university included the small town location where amenities were easily accessible. This also included a smaller university to the bigger cities where I was able to get to know the lecturers and tutors well. I am still able to phone them and they will remember who I am. It also provided opportunity for me to do my practical teaching in city school and small two class schools in neighbouring towns only 30 min away. The best of city and country. The downside was the opportunity to connect with opportunities within Brisbane and other major capital cities however overall it was a great uni and program.

My advice to future students is: If you’re looking to study teaching at usq or any other uni be prepared for this career to not only be a 9 to 5 job but a total lifestyle change. And... please PLEASE take care of yourself and give yourself time away from work activity as well. Teaching can become all consuming.

I'm completing a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning (no longer offered).

Positives: The student support is very good and the course is designed to be delivered online via the web, which is also very good

Negatives: My background is technical/engineering and the course is written by psychologists and teachers who seem to have a very narrow view of how students should be taught and how the delivery of the course should be done. I found it difficult to understand what they wanted.

My advice to future students is: Don't go to USQ for a diploma in secondary teaching.

Positives: I studied the course online which meant I could work and study full time

Negatives: Some of the assignments I had to do didn’t seem realistic to teaching

My advice to future students is: Ask to teach more on prac instead of observing

Positives: Online is handy

Negatives: Not enough communication. All courses are run completely differently. Confusing, hard to use the online site.

My advice to future students is: Get out and get some life experience before you go to uni!
